Biography
Educated in textile materials and received PhD from Manchester University,
Professor HU Jinlian is a faculty in Department of Biomedical Engineering of CityU and leads a Laboratory of Wearable Materials for Healthcare.
Professor HU is an elected Fellow of National Academy of Inventors (USA), International
Association of Advanced Materials (Sweden), Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (UK),
Fellow of textile Institute (UK) and Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel.
She is also a top 2% scientist by Stanford Ranking (actual 228 out of 315721 in materials
science, 0.072%), overall rank of 23662 among ~10 million scientists worldwide. Her work is
mainly characterized by cross-disciplinary and continuous innovation. She has 17781 citations
with Google H-index of 66 and H-index 57 from 411 items and total 12479 citations in Scopus.
Very frequently Prof. HU is invited as plenary/keynote speaker as conferences and
organizations (~200). HU is a visiting chair professor/professor to a number of universities in
different parts of the world and has reviewed papers for >130 journals including Science and
Nature, organizes international conferences as chairman or Committee members cross different
continents.
Specifically, HU has made significant contributions to basic and applied research of shape
memory polymers from structure modelling, function design, materials fabrication and
innovative applications for biomaterials, animal hairs, artificial muscles, fibres, textiles and
artificial spider silks as well as biological sensors. Her scientific contributions to life and
environment are enormous and impacts the life of quality by changing the way of people
to take care of clothes such as easy don compression stocking, easy care wrinkle free,
steaming recovery of wrinkled garments, medically more convenient devices such as
minimally invasive bone scaffold and industrially more powerful materials like supertough fiber for high performance applications. In recent years, HU grows fast in
energy saving and adaptive comfort clothing through smart cooling, warmth retention,
adaptive water vapor permeability and developing textile-based biological sensors for
real-time monitoring of physiological signals, which is considered as the most preferred
and most representative of the next generation of wearable electronics.
In addition, HU has extraordinarily worked with >50 companies (including those she created)
worldwide including USA Procter & Gamble and INVISTA (originally DuPont fibers) as
consultant, adviser, joint project coordinator or R&D contractor for enlightening their minds,
strengthening their innovative power, solving their technical problems and enhancing their
competitiveness through her creative, frontier, pioneer and inspirational ideas, spirits and
deliverables. Because of these, she twice got the highest International Consultancy Awards.
Prof. HU as an inventive educationist nurtures innovative culture and spirits among her students
through research and by starting-up companies (5 start-ups, instrumental for 4 of them). As a
supervisor for 61 PhD and 4 MPhil students, she cultivates the creativity, independent thinking
and all-rounded personality so that some of her students can become entrepreneur-oriented. HU
served as Adjunct Dean of Modern Textile College of Wuhan Textile University and Principal
Consultant of Zhejiang Institute of Modern Textile Industry for a number of years and facilitates
them to achieve more success in invention and commercial success
